                                                   Toponymic Field Workshop                

7:30 am

Check in at Crowne Plaza begins. The bus will depart promptly at 8:00 am

8:00 am

Depart Crowne Plaza, heading north. Brief history of the area around city park lacks, Old School for the Deaf, Downtown Baton Rouge Area as we travel to Southern University.

8:40 am

Arrive at SU on Scott’s Bluff the point of Baton Rouge’s Beginning. Have a discussion of the reason for the naming of Baton Rouge, as well as it’s history and a brief history of SU one of the noted HBCU.

9:10 am

Re-board the bus for the New State Capitol. Tour the capitol and learn its history, as well as visit the top of the capitol to get a look at the entire area, and visit the gift shop.

10:45 am

Re-board the bus and travel to the Old State Capitol. Watch a brief film on the “Ghost of the Mansion” as well as tour the Old State Capitol. Determine why it sits where it does in Baton Rouge.

11:50 am

Re-board the bus for the West Bank of the Mississippi River.

12:30 pm

Stop at Louisiana Bayou Bistro – A Restaurant in Brusly, LA for lunch. This restaurant features a buffet, seafood, steak, Po’boys, and a variety of other foods.

1:45 pm

Visit Nottaway Plantation, in White Castle, LA. Tour the house and visit the gift shop. This is a plantation home on the West Bank that is known for its beauty and circular stair cases on the front of the house.

3:00 pm

Re-board the bus for the Plaquemine Locks. Stop at the locks and view the area.

~4:00 pm

Re-board the bus for the Crowne Plaza Hotel

~5:30 pm

Arrive at the Crowne Plaza Hotel

A room block has been arranged for COGNA.  Reservations can be made starting now!  The contracted rates will be available three (3) days pre and post-meeting dates.  Reservations can be made by calling (800) 678-4065, or use the group link www.crowneplaza.com/execcenterbtr.  Be sure to mention the group code CGN.  Please note that the cut off date to reserve a room is July 15.

NOTE to Federal government attendees:  The federal government rate is $100.00 per night, but if you reserve outside the above link, you will not show up in the COGNA room block.  Please reserve your room in the room block if possible. 

The hotel has an airport shuttle service that is discounted at $8.00 each way.
